Josef Bolf

Born in 1971

Besides classic painting, Josef Bolf typically employs the “children’s” technique of carving into the underlying layers of the image which is rendered even more expressive by the combination of black and pink color. His works are based on comics drawing which is one of his frequently employed techniques along with animation. His paintings capture a children’s world with apocalyptic scenes and a fatal landscape of housing estate architecture. Besides children, they often feature animals behaving like people and thus expressing the animality of human behavior. He transcends the limits of the real as well as of the unreal, combining horror and strong emotional and melancholy tension, expressing an anxiety of the real world.
