Ondřej Brody

Born in 1980

In his works, Ondřej Brody deals with power, the operation of gallery institutions and interpersonal relationships. His works are often characterized by strongly controversial and provocative humor. For instance, in his famous performance, he and other artists defecated on the floor of Veletržní Palace of the National Gallery. The artists did so to protest against the management of the institution. The work he made for Jindřich Chalupecký Award has a fundamentally different message. It gives a raw look into the totalitarian reality of the People’s Republic of China. Brody ordered oil paintings from a Chinese painting factory online. The paintings were made according to photographs sent by Brody, depicting the deformed and injured body parts of victims of Chinese terror. Besides these canvases, the installation also included paintings by a Chinese artist who mutilates portraits of Chinese leaders in various ways.
